Voters for Strong Public Schools is seeking highly motivated and well-organized individuals to work on a political program this election cycle as a Temporary Political Organizer (TPO). With so much at stake in this important election season, TPOs will play a critical role in supporting local school board election programs, local referendums, and nested legislative races.

Position Overview

Temporary Political Organizers (TPOs) will learn the fundamentals of member and political organizing campaign work in order to work with unions, community partners, and other stakeholders in the electoral process at the school board level. TPOs will be asked to participate in all aspects of campaign work, including door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, Hustle texting, coalition building, event planning, and volunteer recruitment. They may also be asked to assist with labor rallies, worksite visits, rep/steward and executive board meetings, digital engagement, and other union activities as needed.

  • Ability and willingness to work some nights and weekends.
  • Working smartphone (iOS or Android) with MiniVAN compatibility
  • Full availability from October 20 – November 7
  • Access to a reliable vehicle (some light travel required)
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness/ability to drive (some light travel required)
  • Prior organizing experience (preferred, not required)
  • Familiarity with the Labor Activation Network and Mobilize (preferred, not required)
  • Prior teaching or training experience a plus
  • Bilingual a plus

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and manage member activists for phone banking and canvassing events.
  • Must be able to hit metric goals on weekly and monthly basis.
  • Develop a strong activist base leading into Get Out the Vote (GOTV) activities ahead of the August primary school board elections.
  • Build and maintain a strong and trusting relationship with union leadership, political candidates, activists and partner organizations.
  • Provide daily/weekly reports of voter contact and volunteer recruitment data to FEA Political Staff.
  • Work with locals to implement political goals and objectives in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate and execute activists’ events based on local needs.
  • Give reports and updates to locals for rep meetings and executive board meetings as well as local leaders when necessary.
  • Attend school board meetings when necessary.
  • There is an expectation to volunteer for nested campaign races at least twice a month on the weekends.

Compensation

This position can be treated as a part-time or full-time position. All positions will be compensated at $22.50/hour, inclusive of all taxes, for a total of $900 a week based upon working 40 hours per week (the amount will be prorated for part-time employees).

This is a temporary position that can begin as early as May 1st, 2024 and continue through Primary Elections or as needed beyond that. Selected candidates will be notified on a rolling basis.
