Despite challenges, Florida’s educators will succeed

By Jairus R. Williams, Student FEA President

Greetings, Florida Education Association! As we entered the spring semester, we had the unique experience of greeting one another yet again in our virtual realities. While this past year posed a unique set of challenges, it did not stop our amazing union from continuing its work to provide an exceptional student, member and educational learning experience to each of us.

For the first time ever, Student FEA’s annual conference has gone virtual. As this is written in January, we hope to see scores of aspiring educators online for the conference in February. We were able to get more than 100 students to attend in person last year, so we are hoping to get more people on with us virtually. This is event is usually the highlight of the Student FEA year.

We are planning a virtual social, professional development sessions and an optional in-person LEGACY community service project. We’re also working on our internship professional learning community (PLC) for this spring semester to help our aspiring educators acclimate better to the classroom. Our job as Student FEA is to help make sure new educators feel supported and connected as they begin their careers.

From student teachers to veterans, we continue to be challenged with teaching during the pandemic. Many of us have hybrid classes, and it can be difficult to navigate. Nonetheless, we will reach our students and educate them to their full potential. I am always confident in Florida educators, because we find unique ways to overcome anything. Remember, in order to be No. 1, you have to be odd.

As always, I consider it a privilege to be a part of this wonderful organization. Continue to be great and make change in the lives of others daily! Blessings to each of you.
