United Faculty of Florida and Florida Education Association Respond to FSU Active Shooter Incident

Earlier today, Florida State University experienced an active shooter event, which has so far resulted in the deaths of two individuals and hospitalized several others.

First and foremost, our thoughts are with those who have been impacted and their loved ones. No parent, guardian or loved one should have to contend with the news that someone they love is injured or will no longer be able to come home to them.

The United Faculty of Florida and the Florida Education Association are checking on faculty, students and graduate assistants to ensure they are physically safe and are providing them with resources to help them get through this time.

Florida has experienced too many losses at the hands of gun violence in schools— and our experiences are not unique in our nation. This is the third shooting in three days impacting schools in our nation—first Dallas and San Antonio now Tallahassee. This is devastating to our communities, and we must not accept that this is just how things are now.

Today, we will do what we can to ensure the safety of those on FSU’s campus.

Moving forward, we are asking policy makers for more than thoughts and prayers.
