WHEREAS workers at unionized Starbucks stores across the United States, including several locations in Florida, have engaged in lawful collective action such as strikes to secure fair wages, safe working conditions, predictable scheduling, and good-faith bargaining from Starbucks management; and
WHEREAS Starbucks Workers United (SWU), representing more than 400 unionized stores nationwide, has documented ongoing unfair labor practices, including retaliation against union supporters, refusal to bargain, unilateral changes to working conditions, and the withholding of benefits from unionized workers; and
WHEREAS the National Labor Relations Board has repeatedly found merit in charges against Starbucks for illegal anti-union actions, including discrimination, surveillance, and refusal to negotiate as required by law; and
WHEREAS the right of workers to organize, bargain collectively, and engage in concerted action, including strike activity, is a fundamental right recognized under the National Labor Relations Act and is central to the strength of all labor unions; and
WHEREAS the mission of the Florida Education Association (FEA) and its affiliates is grounded in solidarity with all workers who are fighting for dignity, respect, and a meaningful voice on the job, and our own members benefit when the broader labor movement grows stronger; and
WHEREAS Starbucks workers in Florida face the same corporate anti-union behavior as workers in other states, and their fight is directly connected to the rights of workers across all industries to join together and demand fair treatment; and
WHEREAS public support from fellow unions strengthens community pressure on employers, protects workers engaged in collective action, and reinforces shared values of equity, worker justice, and democratic workplaces;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the undersigned FEA local presidents stand in full solidarity with Starbucks Workers United and the striking baristas at unionized Starbucks locations in Florida and across the country; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call on Starbucks to immediately cease all anti-union activity, reinstate terminated workers, comply with all NLRB rulings, and begin good-faith bargaining with all unionized stores; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we encourage our members and community allies to support unionized Starbucks stores by uplifting worker voices, participating in solidarity actions where appropriate, and respecting lawful picket lines; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that we reaffirm the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that the fight of Starbucks baristas is a fight for the future of worker rights, fair workplaces, and the health of the American labor movement.
