Martin Luther King Holiday and the Link to Labor and Civil Rights

The American Labor Studies Center explores the relationship between the labor and civil rights movements on its web site....

Labor unions played a critical role in the Civil Rights Movement. Both groups shared the struggles for better wages and equal opportunities. While some smaller unions fought to shut out African-Americans, overall the larger unions, especially those in large urban environments, became the biggest allies for African-Americans in their fight for freedom.

The site includes King's speech to the AFL-CIO convention and video clips of other King speeches. There are also lessons in labor history and links to other Web sites that feature historic images and video clips highlighting the partnership between the labor and civil rights movements.
