- The proposed starting salary of $47,500 leaves our far too many individuals. Amongst those would be left out are veteran teachers, school counselors, media specialists, prekindergarten teachers, teacher’s aides, education staff professionals, and every single education employee in Monroe County where the starting teacher salary is already above $47,500.
- This bill does not provide any long-term relief. Twenty years of disinvestment in public schools cannot be cured in one year. Parents, students, and educators deserve to see a plan to ensure not just a one-time salary increase but a sustained trajectory. New teachers won’t want to move to Florida if they know they will not see salary increases after their initial hire.
- While the bill purports to do away with Best and Brightest in favor of a new bonus program, the reality is that it keeps the worst parts of the current bonus program but changes the name to “Rewarding Great Classroom Teachers for Extending Student Success Program.”
- Using data from the 2018-19 school year, over 760 schools rated “A” or “B” would be left out of the revised bonus program.
- The bill further expands Florida’s unaccountable and discriminatory voucher program at the expense of investing in the public schools which educate the vast majority of Florida’s students.
