The United Teachers of Dade is proud to announce the opening of the first teacher union-run Professional Resource Center (PRC) in Miami, housed on the campus of Miami Southridge Senior High School.

*The purpose of the PRC is to provide additional resources and support for teachers at every stage of their career through site-based professional growth and development opportunities.  “Our work here has been in collaboration with the staff and the principal, Dr. David Moore.  His tireless support for this project will make our efforts especially successful," stated UTD President Karen Aronowitz at the Grand Opening on Monday, February 8, 2010.

Randi Weingarten, AFT President; Karen Aronowitz, UTD President; and Andy Ford, FEA President Randi Weingarten, American Federation of Teachers President and Florida Education Association President, Andy Ford joined Aronowitz for the opening of the PRC.  Both commended President Aronowitz and school principal, David Moore for their collaborative efforts to open the center on-site for educators at Miami Southridge Senior.  Southridge is the school where Aronowitz taught English before her election as President of United Teachers of Dade.

Teacher Kieaita Brown shared her enthusiasm for the Professional Resource Center, saying "It is great knowing our union is here to support us professionally and to help us be the very best we can be.”  Avarita Miller stated "I am so proud to be a UTD member and to be a part of such a historic beginning. I am looking forward to participating in workshops delivered by other professionals from around the county and to be able to access their skills right in my classroom when and where I need their help."

The PRC will initially be open to Miami Southridge teachers, and later will be open to teachers throughout the Miami-Dade County. Aronowitz plans for this to be only the first of many county-wide resources that UTD will offer adding, “Our goal is to give our teachers opportunities to continuously improve their skills which ultimately have a positive impact on student achievement.”

Also present at the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony were: Former State Senator Dorothy Bendross Mindingall; Dr. Larry Feldman, Miami-Dade County School Board Member; Dr. David Moore, Principal, Miami Southridge Senior High School; Steffan Cone, Region Director, Miami-Dade County Public Schools; members of the UTD staff and Southridge High teachers and support staff.
