| On June 15-19, the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) and Broward Teachers Union (BTU) jointly sponsored their first Summer ER&D Institute for union members in their districts. The institute was held at Dr. Michael C. Krop Senior High School on the county line between Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Participants received training in Thinking Math, Managing Antisocial Behavior, Reading Comprehension, and Strategies for Student Success so they can serve as ER&D local site trainers for their respective unions. Trainers for UTD and BTU, the 4th and 5th largest locals in the nation and the largest locals in the State of Florida, will have extensive, powerful and positive impact on many, many educators. |

| As a result of the Southern Regional institute, there are 41 new local site trainers. UTD added 28 and BTU added 13 trainers to their ER&D cadres. In addition to ER&D courses, approximately 15 UTD and BTU participants attended a Grant Writing workshop. Many knowledgeable leaders made this partnership enterprise a success. Facilitators for the ER&D Southern Regional Summer Institute were Bernie Schultz, First Vice President of the Broward Teachers Union and Tom Gammon, Local Site Coordinator for the Untied Teachers of Dade. Technical support was provided by Charley McClaren from FEA. ER&D Trainers for Thinking Mathematics I (Linda Connor and Linda Wright) and Reading Comprehension Instruction (Molly Jo Everett) were from other Florida counties. The ER&D trainers for Managing Antisocial Behavior (Linda Dunn and Angela Gonzalez), Strategies for Student Success I (Sandy Joseph and Sakinah Brown) and Reading Comprehension assistants (David Slutz and Loretha Mathis) were all home-grown trainers from Miami-Dade County/UTD. The UTD ER&D trainers were pleased to expand their leadership roles as they served as FEA state ER&D trainers. The positive results of this first time UTD/BTU partnership are significant for members, particularly those who participated in this joint ER&D professional development initiative. According to Tom Gammon, UTD Local Site Coordinator, "The instructional personnel enjoyed sharing teaching experiences across county lines, built professional bonds, and just enjoyed coming together for a union activity. Also of significance is that the two locals realized that there is much to be gained from working together on our ER&D programs. We also learned a lot from each other." Tom noted several other benefits including: financial savings; training more participants than would otherwise be financially or logistically possible; building lasting relationships, identifying common initiatives and working collaboratively on these initiatives. UTD and BTU have already made plans to work more collaboratively. The 1-day Winter Institute is planned for November 21, 2009, at a location convenient to participants from each district. Both unions have agreed to share their trainers, and there has been some discussion about offering joint participant level ER&D courses for both UTD and BTU teachers. In addition, UTD will provide trainers for an upcoming Meeting the Standards for Paraprofessionals training planned by BTU. For more information, please contact:
