Regional Trainings a Success!

During the weeks of June 8-13 and June 15-19, locals in four regions sponsored effective and engaging face-to-face professional training. Approximately 220 educators, 50+ in each region, participated in AFT's Educational Research & Dissemination (ER&D) courses, grant writing, and leadership skill training. Holding the trainings in conveniently located sites within geographic areas made professional development more affordable and accessible for local members.

Danielle Montes, Director of the FEA Professional Development Department, said that moving PD offerings to the regional format was a big risk that paid off with positive and remarkable results. "The RTC's have helped us build capacity and invest in our members. With two more regionals to go, we have now served more members than we typically do at Saddlebrook. When we total the number of participants at all the summer trainings, about 300 members will have increased their knowledge and skills to benefit students across Florida."

Highlights of the RTC's include:

  • Broward Teachers Union (BTU) and the United Teachers of Dade (UTD) collaborated to hold the South RTC and have now built an exciting partnership around educator quality issues
  • Six locals in the Panhandle region united to grow their training cadres and provide the first ever weeklong PD training; they also developed a strong working relationship with the Gulf Coast Community College
  • Larger numbers of teachers, particularly younger educators, participated in the East Central RTC, hosted by the Volusia Teachers' Organization
  • The Crown region participants enjoyed the proximity of the PD courses and the 21st century technology classroom resources at the Pacetti Middle School
  • Leadership capacity increased in each region as members took on new roles and responsibilities to plan, organize and deliver the RTC courses
  • New friendships were forged within and across local associations

The Association of Bay County Educators (ABCE) hosted participants from ABCE, Escambia Education Association (EEA), Franklin (FCTA), Santa Rosa Professional Educators (SRPE), Okaloosa County Education Association (OCEA) and Washington Education Association (WEA). ER&D courses included Thinking Math I, Foundations of Effective Teaching, Beginning Reading as well as leadership skills through the FEA's Action Learning Lab. Sixteen participants completed the requirements to become ER&D trainers.

St. Johns Education Association (SJEA) hosted the Crown RTC where ER&D Managing Antisocial Behavior and Strategies for Student Success were offered.

Volusia Teachers' Organization offered Thinking Math I and Managing Antisocial Behavior at the East Coast RTC.

BTU and UTD partnered to offer their participants courses in Thinking Math I, Grant Writing, Reading Comprehension, Strategies for Student Success, and Managing Antisocial Behavior.
