ER&D Reading - Best Practices for Educators

 0 user(s) rated this page

FEA, through its affiliation with AFT’s ER&D, offers educators two premier professional development courses in reading. Both courses, Beginning Reading Instruction and Reading Comprehension, align with current research on effective instruction to promote strong reading skills in students.

The AFT ER&D Beginning Reading Instruction provides teachers of students who are learning to read with the research, strategies and application practice on the Big 5 – phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

The Reading Comprehension Instruction course is suitable for all educators who wish to improve their students’ comprehension skills. In this course, participants learn the research base on reading comprehension and vocabulary development. They also learn and practice a range of instructional strategies for both narrative and expository texts.

Districts may elect to use these courses to fulfill the first component of the Reading Endorsement requirement. FEA has worked with several local associations to develop a cadre of reading trainers available to interested local associations. If you or your local association is interested in offering these trainings, please contact Charley McClaren at charley.mcclaren@floridaea.org
