ELL Course

During the last year, FEA PD has been in the forefront in offering NEA's English Language Learners: Culture, Equity Language Training Module for Closing the Achievement Gaps (ELL), a research-based and classroom-focused training for educators who teach English Language Learners and culturally diverse students. FEA is working with the NEA, and two local associations, Volusia Teachers Organization (VTO) and St. Lucie CTA/CU, to provide members with options for fulfilling Florida’s ESOL requirements.

According to NEA, ELL is a resource with research-based and classroom-focused instructional and advocacy strategies to help educators:

  • Engage English Language Learners in academic learning and English language development
  • Recognize and build on cultural and equity assumptions and culturally relevant instruction
  • Create classroom and school environments that facilitate language learning
  • Absorb, understand and capitalize on language acquisition theory
  • Recognize language development stages and promising instructional practices for teaching in the classroom and school
  • Identify appropriate ELL instructional strategies aligned and differentiated to lessons objectives, and goal
  • Find innovative ways to motivate ELLs to practice academic language skills that are carefully structured and require students to demonstrate growing proficiency.

Two VTO trainers, Jesse Harris and JoAnn Williams have been instrumental in the delivery of ELL and assisting with the ELL/ESOL alignment. Their local association gave them access to content and leadership training opportunities. Both are recognized as master teachers and sought out for their pedagogical and content expertise.
