A Great Day to Be An American

Tuesday night was a historic evening, unprecedented in the history of our country.  All of us should feel tremendous pride in the role played by Labor in bringing change to our nation.  Here in Florida, our state turned blue and pro-labor candidates had some success in winning congressional seats, retaining legislative seats and in winning posts at all levels of state and local government.

And this isn't just a small victory--it is a victory for each and every working American--working families made this happen--a CNN pundit even said it earlier  tonight--if Obama wins Florida he needs to thank labor. Remember, we all do different work , but we are labor and should be proud of it!

Although, President-Elect Obama inherits an economic mess, a world in turmoil, a war that has been misguided, a loss of respect from our former world allies, neglected public schools and public services, and many other challenges…all we have to do is look to what Barack taught all of us this electing: it's about hope! Yes we can! was the theme and as we approach the steep climb of our normal work tomorrow morning, keep in mind--we did it this time and we will do it again in 2010!

Enjoy your celebration, because the real workis ahead. It begins right now...today and the weeks and months ahead.

This is a great day to be an American--although I am sadden Obama's grandmother didn't live just another day to see this dream come true…the dream  that Dr. Martin L King, Jr. taught us has taken a huge step tonight toward being a reality…it's a better world!

We need to work together to encourage our elected officials to make our schools a priority.  Our real work starts today!
