Student FEA members always take advantage of the annual NEA Summer Leadership Conference. This year, the full delegation of 19 members attended the conference in New Orleans with more than half being first-time SFEA attendees. Four SFEA delegates remained to attend the NEA Representative Assembly.
There was a lot of learning and networking, but the most empowering portion of the trip was their participation in a full day dedicated to community service. The project is called Outreach to Teach. SFEA members joined a workforce of approximately 400, including members of FEA retired, and volunteers from the community to improve a local school that needed a facelift. This year’s project repaired and beautified Belle Chasse High School, in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, one of the many communities outside of New Orleans forever changed in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina.
With temperatures soaring around 90 degrees, it was a hard day’s work for NEA Student and Retired members, plus Belle Chasse faculty. They were scraping and peeling paint from hundreds of surfaces, sanding rust spots on exposed metal pipes, painting and painting and painting. SFEA members were carefully taping windows and walls so trim could be touched up, replacing rickety courtyard benches with new, sturdy ones, and so much more. You can see the hard work of our SFEA members below. Click the image to view and enlarge the picture. See the caption for each picture, from left to right, below.
